After playing The Bard’s Tale IV it got me thinking about old school grid-based dungeon crawlers. Despite being an old man, there are an awful lot of classics I’ve never played and a whole lot I haven’t played since I was a kid. I want to attempt to see if I can get through some of them…

I’ve always appreciated early CRPGs in all their forms but have never actually FINISHED many. Despite owning a lot over the years I’ve tended to sink a lot of time into them before having something else come along and tempt me away.

In recent years I’ve enjoyed the Etrian Odyssey games with their focus on mapping so thought it might be interesting to stream playing some classic Might and Magic or Wizardry whilst mapping them with the awesome Grid Cartographer.

80s era dungeon crawlers and CRPGs are notoriously harsh, often relying on grinding levels early on just so you can survive wandering around their start areas. It’ll be interesting to see if I can tolerate old design now my attention span is so poor!
